Bizsu, a sustainable products firm based in Singapore, has hired environmental engineer Dr Snigdha Sharma as environment and sustainability advisor.

Sharma, who holds a doctorate in environmental science, joins the year-old startup to drive greater adoption of sustainable product procurement and practises among businesses in Asia.

Launched in 2019, Bizsu distributes sustainable products, including plant-based packaging, bagasse tableware, compostable and reusable plant bottles and low-energy airconditioning solutions.

Sharma brings experience in waste valorisation — that is, reusing, recycling or composting waste materials and converting them into useful products — to the role, and is an advocate of reducing plastic waste by using it as fuel.

Sharma’s academic research was conducted at TERI university, India, on the use of bauxite waste as a catalyst.

She joins Bizsu at a time when sustainability is becoming more important for businesses and requires cost-effective sustainability solutions, said Brice Degeyter, the firm’s founder and general manager.

“It’s time to bring in innovative products and services into businesses and disrupt the oral-care, air conditioning and food industries, which have been functioning the same old fashion way for way too long,” he said.

Sharma said that there is a need to create awareness of the benefits of sustainable business to counter the notion that green products are expensive.

“On the contrary, in the longer run [green products] are more beneficial for business, helping them to stay resilient in uncertain times,” she said.

Over the last year, Bizsu has worked with organisations including Shangri-La Hotels & Resorts, Singapore Management University, SusGain, and Green Is The New Black.
