Homemakers in their 50s and above were shown how to segregate recyclables from normal waste at home at Recycling Week today.
Held at the open field next to Jurong East bus interchange, the event had a ‘Kitchen’ booth where participants could physically separate recyclables from a pool of household items and to learn tips on reducing, reusing, and recycling waste in the kitchen.
Residents were reminded of the do’s and don’ts of recycling, for instance, items contaminated with food and liquid waste should not be thrown into the blue recycling bins in housing estates.
These homemakers were the main target group at the outreach event as they belong to the group of residents who handles most of the recyclables at home.
Participants were also given goodie bags, which contained an informative educational brochure with information on the common types of recyclables found at home, among other freebies.
This annual outreach organised by the National Environment Agency aims at changing mindsets and spurring environmentally-friendly action within the community.
A slew of activities such as competitions were also lined up at the event, including exchanging recyclables for cash and field trips to waste-to-energy and sorting plants made available through on-the-spot sign up by participants.
Other fringe activities such as competitions, environment themed storytelling sessions and recycled craft workshops are also being held on September 16 and 23.
The public can also bring e-waste for recycling on September 15 and 16 at HDB Hub Atrium in Toa Payoh.
