The Indonesian government has signed the contract for the implementation of the Rimba Raya scheme which seeks to preserve 80,000 hectares of forest land in Central Borneo in exchange for carbon credits. This will be Indonesia’s first undertaking for the “Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation” (REDD) and under it, Indonesia will be saving Rimba Raya from conversion into a palm oil plantation. The Rimba Raya will also be one of the most important orang-utan conservaton projects in the world. The project almost never pushed through after the Indonesian forestry ministry announced it would halve its size as many palm oil plantations already had prior claims in the area.
