Kuantan has won a prestigious international best practice award for local environmental management.
The city won a Silver in Category D of the Whole City Awards in the International Awards for Liveable Communities 2011 (Livcom).
Joondalup near Perth, Australia and Nansha in Guangzhou, China were awarded Gold each in the same category, which is reserved for cities that have a population of 150,001 to 400,000.
The east coast city was among the finalists in Category D, which included Andong, South Korea, Batangas in southwestern Luzon, the Philippines and Taitung County in Taiwan.
Songpa, a city near Seoul, hosted this year’s Livcom Awards Finals, which were streamed live online from Oct 27 to 31 at www.livcomawards.com.
The Livcom Awards, which is endorsed by the United Nations Environment Programme, is conferred every year on communities from around the world that compete to attain proper environmental management and create liveable communities.
Communities are divided into five categories according to population size. Category A is for small communities not more than 20,000 people while the last category, Category E, is reserved for communities of more than 400,000 people.
