Fifty pedestrian overhead bridges across Singapore have been fitted with Light Emitting Diode (LED) lights.
The lights at these bridges will remain switched off between midnight and 7am.
But, a motion sensor an Intelligent Lighting Detection System (ILDS) will switch these lights on automatically when someone walks up the stairs to the bridge.
The use of these lights and motion sensors will reduce monthly energy consumption by up to 50 per cent.
And that’s potential savings of up to S$30,000 annually in electricity bills.
The Land Transport Authority plans to expand the use of LED lighting to new commuter facilities, such as pedestrian underpasses and bus shelters.
It will also install LED lighting at 350 other existing pedestrian overhead bridges as well as commuter facilities where the florescent lights are due for replacement.
