LED sector expected to benefit from global standardization

An international standard for light-emitting diode (LED) lighting devices proposed by the International Energy Agency (IEA) is expected to help expand the LED market, a local industry association said recently.

With a mutual recognition of accreditation programs for testing solid state lighting (SSL) products, LED products will be able to be certified by existing standards like the Japanese Industrial Standards and Energy Star, a US accreditation body for energy-saving products, according to the Photonics Industry and Technology Association (PIDA).

At a meeting in Tokyo March 6-9, the 4E SSL Annex, a body under the IEA that provides advice on the implementation of quality assurance programs, set the target of establishing a platform of such mutual recognition by June 2013.

Development of energy-efficient LED lighting devices is expected to accelerate as prices decline and support is offered by governments worldwide, the association said.

Taiwan, whose LED components industry is one of the largest in the world, is predicted to capitalize on the new measure, the PIDA said, adding that Taiwan topped the table of global LED capacity in 2011 with 28 percent.

Local LED manufacturers, for example, can enter the markets in Japan, South Korea or China in the form of contract production or sales and can also supply other LED packaging and module makers, the association said.

The large capacity of Taiwan’s LED sector gives it an advantage in providing thorough LED lighting solutions in one purchase, the PIDA stated.

Meanwhile, the 2012 LED Lighting Taiwan trade fair, slated for June 19-21 in Taipei, has so far attracted interest from some 250 manufacturers worldwide, including major brands such as Osram, Cree, Seoul Semiconductor and Nichia.
