LG Chem will finally start operations at its plant in Holland, Michigan in July to produce batteries for electric vehicles. Although the facility was completed last June, the company held off on opening the lines due to worse-than-expected demand for electric cars.
In February, the US Department of Energy produced an audit report claiming that employees at the plant were killing time “playing video games” or taking part in community volunteer work as they had no actual work to do.
The facility was given a US$150-million stimulus grant from the federal US government, and President Barack Obama attended its ground-breaking ceremony in 2010.
