Earth Hour will commence at 8.30pm on March 31 next year and the theme for Singapore will be “I Will If You Will”.
For one hour, the community, businesses, celebrities and government agencies will be encouraged to switch off lights for Earth Hour, and show that Singapore is committed to the planet along with the rest of the world.
Participants are encouraged to engage and share their efforts on social media platforms during Earth Hour by inserting the hashtag #earthhoursg when discussing responsible environmental initiatives that have been undertaken.
The event is part of a global effort led by the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) to inspire local communities to take concrete action that go “Beyond the Hour” to preserve and protect the planet.
“We want people to make it personal, and understand that they own a stake in ensuring that the planet remains in good health for future generations,” said Ms Elaine Tan, CEO of WWF Singapore.
Earth Hour was launched in 2007 in Sydney, Australia. This year, hundreds of millions of people across 135 countries joined the event and switched off lights for an hour.
It also marked the start of something new for Earth Hour 2011 - going Beyond the Hour - to commit to lasting action to fight climate change.
WWF Singapore also encouraged individuals, businesses and organisations to pledge to keep their air conditioning temperature set at 24°C or higher.
