Ma invites anti-nuclear group to visit Lungmen plant

ROC President Ma Ying-jeou invited members of Mom Loves Taiwan, a local anti-nuclear alliance, to visit the Lungmen nuclear power plant in New Taipei City to help them better understand the station’s operation.

“Visiting the site does not mean you support nuclear power, but to participate and understand the plant’s operation,” Ma said during a meeting with the alliance in Taipei City March 31.

“The public has been more concerned than ever about nuclear safety issues following the Fukushima nuclear disaster March 11, 2011,” he said. “The government will listen humbly, study thoroughly, communicate sincerely and decide carefully on nuclear matters.”

Ma reiterated that establishing a nuclear-free homeland is his administration’s ultimate goal. However, conditions do not allow the immediate abolition of nuclear power, so atomic energy is being gradually phased out, he said.
