Manesar lab to check energy efficiency of power gadgets

With rising awareness about energy efficiency regulations and strict government norms, there is an increased need to check and validate claims of electrical companies. A dedicated energy efficiency laboratory was set up on Wednesday at Manesar by Underwriters Laboratories (UL), a product safety testing and certification company.

The lab will provide energy efficiency and performance testing for Indian manufacturers in line with the star labelling programme of the government department of Bureau of Energy Efficiency.

The facility, spread across 18,000 sq ft and built at a cost of US $ 2.2 million, will cater to the testing requirements of lighting and heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) industries.

“Energy-efficient appliances are key to optimising available energy resources,” said Sajeev Jesudas, managing director, Asia Pacific, UL Verification Services. The new third party testing lab will help reduce costs for manufacturers who either have to get their products accredited through National Accreditation Board for Testing and Calibration Laboratories (NABL) or Quality Council of India (QCI).

“As of now we are not venturing into industrial electronics but the facility can be used to test energy efficiency of home appliances, traffic signals and  HVAC products,” said RA Venkitachalam, vice-president.
