MOEA promotes green trade with islandwide programs

A new round of nationwide training courses, discussion panels and seminars are scheduled to begin March 1, in an effort to promote green trade, organizers said.

Taipei will be the first leg of the islandwide road show, followed by Taichung on March 7 and Kaohsiung on March 12, said the Bureau of Foreign Trade under the Ministry of Economic Affairs (MOEA), one of the organizers.

The MOEA, in collaboration with the Chung-Hua Institution for Economic Research and the Industrial Technology Research Institute, initiated a three-year Green Trade Promotion Project in 2011 to promote sustainable and environmentally friendly products, services and resources.

Since new environmental standards lead to new business opportunities, the prospect of green trade is “promising,” according to the organizers.

The output value of Taiwan’s green trade exports, for example, reached US$11.8 billion in 2009, accounting for 5.8 percent of its total exports and 5 percent of global green product markets, the project’s official website said.

The top five importers of Taiwan’s green products and services in 2009 were China (US$3.42 billion), Europe (US$2.26 billion), the United States (US$2.25 billion), Japan (US$450 million) and Hong Kong (US$300 million).

The government hopes the new round of events can help more local businesses gain a better understanding of this trend as well as cultivate over 1,000 people to be specialized talents in this field, the organizers said.

Besides offering environmental policy analysis, training courses, business consulting and international marketing courses, the project can also let Taiwan’s green product manufacturers and service providers have better connections with the global market, they said.
