When rain hits southern parts of the country on Wednesday, the summer monsoon season will finally begin, significantly later than usual.
This July start is the latest since 1992, when monsoons began on July 2 in the central region.
Precipitation for this June was 77.6 mm, less than half the average 158.6 mm. Lack of rainfall has led to a nationwide shortage of water for agricultural and household use.
The Korea Meteorological Administration on Tuesday forecast that heavy rain will start in Jeju early Wednesday morning. It will move to South Jeolla Province on Wednesday afternoon and to South Gyeongsang Province on Wednesday night.
Sporadic showers are expected in Seoul, inland Gyeonggi Province, western Gangwon Province and North Chungcheong Province from Wednesday afternoon.
The KMA said the monsoon will reach the entire country by Sunday or next Monday.
