She joins the non-profit to run a project called Suara Masyarakat (community voices in Malay). The 36-month, European Commission-funded project aims to build capacity among the Malaysian media, citizen journalists and NGOs, and promote the empowerment of marginalised groups, with a focus on women.
She teams up with Wan Nurul Hanani, who is project director for United States-funded initiatives for Internews in Malaysia. Both will report to Internews’ regional headquarters in Bangkok.
Rosli said she aims to establish new relationships and initiatives that are relevant to the needs of media practitioners and local communities in Malaysia, “especially with the ongoing [Covid-19] pandemic and the challenges it poses to the role of journalists.”
“My background is mainly in journalism and conservation, so it would also be interesting to see how we can expand reporting on the environment through Internews’ Earth Journalism Network, explore innovative storytelling approaches and increase collaboration with minorities and marginalised groups in order for more people to access and impart credible information,” she said.
Before joining Internews, Rosli wrote for publications including Vice, New Naratif, The New Straits Times and The Borneo Post. She has also worked in communications for forestry non-profit Earthworm Foundation, conservation group WWF-Malaysia and Animal Projects & Environmental Education (APE Malaysia). Rosli started out as a broadcast journalist with Malaysian news agency Bernama.
