National Tsing Hua University in Hsinchu City will become a greener campus following the inauguration of the Delta Building, a green construction project built with support from Delta Group and the Ministry of Education, according to the university Oct. 14.
“The Delta Building is a sign that NTHU is moving towards a green campus,” NTHU President Lih J. Chen said during the inauguration ceremony. “Modern technologies have brought great benefits to people’s lives, but have also produced problems such as climate change, energy shortages and environmental deterioration.
“Departments at our school conduct many experiments all year round,” said NTHU’s Office of Secretariat. “The building is very meaningful for us as it can help cut energy and water usage by 20 percent and 30 percent respectively.”
The building will house the College of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, the Department of Materials Science and Engineering, and the Institute of NanoEngineering and MicroSystems, the secretariat added.
“The Delta Building provides professors and students with a healthy and eco-friendly learning environment,” said Bruce C. H. Cheng, chairman and founder of Delta Group, who noted that the new structure uses solar panels provided by the Delta Group for generating electricity and light-emitting diode lighting equipment. “We hope they can experience the benefits of LED lights and solar power systems.”
According to NTHU, Delta Group has long been concerned about the environment and has been actively involved in green manufacturing, recycling and reuse, and waste management.
The 11-story Delta Building was constructed at a cost of NT$800 million (US$26.3 million), with NT$200 million coming from Delta Group, NTHU said.
