Japan’s Electric Power Development (J-Power) has resumed building the new Ohma nuclear power plant, which has been suspended since the 2011 earthquake and tsunami crippled the country’s nuclear industry. Local officials said the project was necessary to boost the local economy, and that all safety measures would be followed.
The national government recently resolved to phase out nuclear power over time, but stopped short of banning the operation of the two nuclear plants already under construction. Existing plants will be allowed to run for the remainder of their initial 40-year life-spans, but will not be recommissioned afterwards.
