Olam has appointed conservation and ecology scientist Dr Shailendra Mishra as head of climate, environment and natural capital.

Mishra joins the Singapore-based agribusiness firm after more than four years with Asian School of Environment in Singapore, where he worked as a specialist in nature-based solutions for various systems including agriculture.

Mishra takes on the role of leading Olam Group’s global corporate environmental sustainability strategy, which includes climate action, regenerative agriculture, and ecosystems workstreams.

“As a conservation and ecology scientist, I have always been passionate about developing nature-based solutions and how these solutions can enhance socio-economic outcomes,” he wrote on LinkedIn. “I look forward to contributing to the overall Olam Group’s vision to be nature-, climate- and livelihood-positive.”

Over his career, Mishra has worked as research fellow at Nanyang Technological University, and was a post-doctoral fellow at Singapore Centre for Environmental Life Sciences Engineering and NUS Environmental Research Institute.

Among Mishra’s most recent scientific papers was a review of the state of Southeast Asia’s peatlands, and the best ways to manage and restore them.

Mishra has a doctorate from the National University of Singapore on the ecological drivers of tropical peatland oxidation and the causes of greenhouse gas emissions from peatlands.
