Philips Lumileds to build new facilities in Bayan Lepas

Philips Lumileds Sdn Bhd is embarking on a new expansion plan to its existing facility in Bayan Lepas.

The world’s leading provider of power light emitting diodes (LEDs) signed a lease agreement with Penang Development Corp (PDC) on Friday for a 12-acre plot next to the Penang International Airport in Bayan Lepas.

Glenn Brownlie, general manager of Philips Lumileds, said a new facility dedicated for phosphor and new product research and development, as well as a design centre would be built at the site.

“We will also build a new facility for Philips Lumileds Global Customer Quality Team and Finance Team.

“The plan also includes the construction of a clean room manufacturing facility for the production of high-brightness power LEDs, LED modules and assemblies,” he said.

The new Philips Lumileds facilities will be the first in Malaysia to be designed with 100% LED lighting, both interior and exterior, to lower energy consumption, reduce carbon footprint, in line with the Cleaner, Greener Penang campaign.

General manager Datuk Rosli Jaafar signed the agreement on behalf of PDC, while Philips Lumileds was represented by Glenn.

Construction for the new expansion is expected to begin next month, and will take between 12 and 15 months.

However, the total investment value of the new expansion plan and the number of new jobs to be created were not revealed.
