Putrajaya and Cyberjaya are to be developed as pioneer townships in green technology.
The development would reflect the government’s commitment towards environmentally sound and sustainable living practices, said Energy, Green Technology and Water Minister Datuk Seri Peter Chin Fah Kui here yesterday.
He said the ministry had teamed up with the Green Technology Corporation (GreenTech) to facilitate the development.
“We are developing a guideline and rating system based on the carbon footprint baseline to facilitate the development in other cities as well.”
Chin’s speech was read by his deputy, Noriah Kasnon, at the Malaysian Institute of Management and the Konrad Adenuer Foundation corporate social responsibility dialogue in Jalan Sultan Ismail, here.
The development will include site selection, urban design, neighbourhood patterns, community wellbeing and green technology construction and innovation.
“It is aimed at improving the nation’s quality of life through a green community culture as well as a way of life and extending this benefit to other countries in the region.”
Chin added that the ministry had formed a Special Committee on Renewable Energy to monitor the Small Renewable Energy Power Programme, which was introduced in 2001.
“The sources that have been identified under this programme are biomass, biogas, mini-hydro and solid waste.”
Chin also announced that the ministry would organise the International Greentech and Eco Products Exibition and Conference Malaysia from Sept 7 to 10 next year at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre.
“The conference, which was held in October this year, was a success in keeping the public informed to ensure that the green technology agenda is achieved in the long run.”
