Protested rare earths refinery fires up kilns

Australian rare earth mining firm Lynas is firing up operations in its controversial new refinery in Malaysia. The company has been granted a temporary operating license that allows it to refine limited quantities for a two-year monitoring period. Meanwhile, community protests that have dogged the new plant’s operators continue, as activists threaten to bar the port of entry for the next batch of unrefined materials. The activists claim that Lynas does not have an adequate plan in place for any radioactive waste that might result from operations.
