Selangor BN: State water reserve levels critically low

The level of water reserve in the state is at a critical 2.4 per cent, said Selangor Barisan Nasional coordinator Datuk Seri Mohd Zin Mohamed.

He said the water reserve was way below the ideal level of 20 per cent, with Selangor bound to be hit by a serious water crisis in 2014.

Mohd Zin said the shortage of water had turned away investments worth RM3.8bil in the state.

“The water issue is so serious that 129 factories with an investment value of RM3.8bil, with a potential to generate 12,300 jobs, could not set up here,” he told reporters at the Selangor Umno headquarters on Monday.

He said the Pakatan Rakyat-led Selangor state government had rejected the Langat 2 project, which would see water from Pahang channeled to Selangor, because they were afraid it would give political mileage to Barisan Nasional.

“Singapore does not politicise their water problems because they see it as a basic necessity and consider it a matter of national security,” he said.

He said the water restructuring process, increase in tariffs and construction of a treatment plant in Hulu Langat were separate issues.

The state government had insisted on resolving all the issues together before giving the nod to the water transfer project.

“Water treatment, distribution and tariffs are under the state government. It’s up to them. Water transfer is cross-boundary (between federal and state governments) and we should discuss about that.

“If Barisan regains Selangor in the election, we will resolve this matter immediately,” he said.

On another matter, Mohd Zin said the Selangor Barisan service centre hotline (Pakar) had experienced a spike in the number of calls received since Prime Minister Najib Tun Razak launched it on May 10.

“It went up by 37 per cent, with 1,306 calls received in the week following the launch,” he said.

Of the complaints received, 72 per cent had been resolved while the remaining 28 per cent are pending.
