Senate proposes perks to promote electric cars

The Senate Ways and Means Committee is preparing legislation that will promote the use of electric cars, its chairman said Thursday.

In a press statement, Senator Ralph Recto said the country needs to shift to electric vehicles to adapt to the rising oil prices.

Recto added there is no recourse but to go electric to save money, oil, and to protect the environment.

The committee report will propose nine-year excise and value-added tax holidays to encourage the importation of electric vehicles.

The committee report consolidates similar bills filed by Senators Juan Miguel Zubiri, Miriam Defensor-Santiago, and Antonio Trillanes IV.

Meanwhile, drivers of electric cars will be exempted from the Motor Vehicle User’s Charge and the number-coding scheme.

On Tuesday, Chevron Philippines and Pilipinas Shell raised the pump prices of premium gasoline by P1.40 per liter, regular gasoline by P1 per liter, and kerosene by P0.30 per liter.
