Seoul, Beijing, Tokyo to share nuclear accident info

Korea, China, and Japan have agreed to build a system to share relevant information immediately if a nuclear plant accident happens, the Yomiuri Shimbun reported Tuesday.

A joint statement to be released after a trilateral summit in Tokyo on May 21-22 will elaborate on their agreement under which any of the three countries will immediately notify the other two of the details if a nuclear accident happens. They will also launch an expert panel that will meet regularly to discuss safe management of nuclear power plants and radiation-related food safety rules.

The Japanese government last month failed to notify Korea and China before it released large amounts of contaminated water from the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant into the sea.

At a previous trilateral summit in December 2008, the three countries issued a joint statement on disaster cooperation. At the upcoming summit, the leaders of the three countries will also discuss joint disaster relief efforts.
