Separate billing for waste collection may be implemented

Households will be billed separately for waste collection if the proposal for direct billing is given the green light, said National Solid Waste Management policy director Azizan Ariffin.

Azizan said the separate billing would enable house owners to know exactly how much they are paying for waste collection.

Property owners may see a reduction in their assessment bills if the proposal is implemented, he said.

Azizan said the proposal to initiate separate billing for collection of domestic waste was provided for under the Solid Waste and Public Cleansing Management Act 2007 (Act 672), which would be enforced on Sept 1.

“The new Act will be enforced in all states in the peninsula except for Selangor, Penang and Perak,” Azizan said after a briefing for contractors about projects under the NKEA Greater Kuala Lumpur/Klang Valley held at Menara Seri Wilayah, Precinct 2, here yesterday.

He added from Sept 1, all contractors involved in waste management would have to apply for a licence from the Department of National Solid Waste Management or the Solid Waste and Public Cleansing Corporation.

“It is not to add burden to the contractors but we need to monitor them. Some do not carry out their duties after getting a contract.

“Instead, they sub-contract it to others and this leads to a drop in the service,” he said in reply to a question by one of the attendees at the briefing.
