Singapore has about 4,500 ‘green collars’

Singapore now has about 4,500 professionals who work in the development, design, construction and maintenance of green buildings, a senior official has said.

John Keung, chief executive officer of the Building and Construction Authority, said the authority aims to grow the pool of “green collars” in Singapore to 20,000 by 2020 to meet the growing demand, local daily Lianhe Zaobao reported on Thursday.

Keung was speaking at a ceremony to mark the graduation of a batch of 34 students from a master of science program in sustainable building design, which was a joint effort between the Building and Construction Authority and the University of Nottingham.

The two-year part-time postgraduate program provides professional development and progression for top tier green building professionals. Keung said the graduates will help “anchor our green building movement in Singapore and the region.”

Singapore now has more than 1,200 certified green buildings, which accounted for 16 percent of the total gross floor area in Singapore. The government is aiming for 80 percent of the buildings to go green by 2030. The Building and Construction Authority recently also increased incentives for buildings to go green in renovation.
