Singapore to share sewage, wastewater treatment know-how with New Delhi

Singapore’s experience in the planning and design of the recycle and reuse of treated sewage and wastewater and the delivery of such projects will be shared with the Indian city of New Delhi.

This will happen under a new programme supported by Singapore’s Temasek Foundation (TF) with a grant amount of S$463,149 and co-funded by India’s Delhi Jal Board (DJB).

Singapore Cooperation Enterprise (SCE) and Temasek Foundation announced their support for the new programme on Wednesday.

A grant agreement was signed in New Delhi by the Chief Executive Officers of Delhi Jal Board and Singapore Cooperation Enterprise.

Under the Grant Agreement, the programme aims to provide advisory and a series of capacity building activities to assist DJB in two areas.

The first is to help DJB officials achieve an in-depth understanding on the benefits and challenges for developing an integrated and holistic water management framework. This includes the recycle and reuse of treated sewage or wastewater. The experience and lessons learnt from Singapore in the development of policy frameworks and actions required to implement water recycling strategies will also be shared.

Another area is building the capability of DJB key officials for effective management of development, implementation and operation of sewage and wastewater recycling and reuse related infrastructure projects, including delivering of projects on a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) basis.

CEO of SCE Alphonsus Chia said, “SCE is happy to partner Temasek Foundation and Delhi Jal Board in sharing Singapore’s experience in wastewater recycle and reuse planning, designing and implementation of projects on a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) basis.

“We hope that through this partnership, the Singapore team is able to develop a integrated and holistic concept plan for DJB to help meet its water supply need on a sustainable basis, and that it will lead to new cooperation opportunities in Delhi.”

CEO of Temasek Foundation Benedict Cheong said, “Cities are engines of growth, and the management of scarce resources like water and wastewater is critical to support the growth of cities. Through Temasek Foundation’s support for this programme, we hope the officials from Delhi Jal Board will find feasible and sustainable solutions to meet the needs of their communities.”
