South West District steps up effort to cut energy consumption

Residents in the South West District can now be environmentally and socially responsible simply by reducing home energy consumption through the iContribute - South West Energy Challenge.

It is part of the district’s 10-year ECo Plan (Environment & Community Plan) to reduce energy consumption by 10 per cent.

Senior Minister of State for Environment and Water Resources, Grace Fu, announced this at the South West Clean and Green Carnival on Saturday.

The five-month long programme is developed by the National Environment Agency (NEA) and the South West Community Development Council (CDC), supported by corporate partners ExxonMobil Asia Pacific and Philips Electronics Singapore.

It aims to get more residents to save energy and pay less for electricity through energy saving habits, such as switching to energy-efficient light-bulbs, setting air-con temperatures at 25 degrees celsius and choosing appliances with more ticks.

For households with proven energy savings by end-March, ExxonMobil will donate S$10, capped at S$5,000, to the Kids-Up @ South West programme. This is a start-up educational fund for kindergarten children from low-income families.

Volunteers will install new light-bulbs in 100 needy households in Clementi Avenue 2, to help reduce their electricity consumption.

Ms Fu, who is also MP for Yuhua, said this programme will benefit both the environment and needy families. She said 3,500 low-income households in the district will enjoy free replacement of energy-efficient lightings in the next five months.
