Star’s green efforts recognised

The role of the media in pushing the green agenda was recognised when Star Publications (M) Bhd received a Green Media Award from Japan-based International Green Purchasing Network.

This is the first time the non-governmental organisation, which promotes awareness and networking opportunities for green purchasing and development of environmentally-friendly products and services, has conferred such an award.

Its chairman Prof Ryoichi Yamamoto described Star Publications’ environmental performance as impressive.

Prof Ryoichi flew in from Japan for the presentation at Menara Star here yesterday.

The award was based on recommendations by the network’s Malaysian chapter, the Green Purchasing Network Malaysia (GPNM).

GPNM president Datuk Seri Izmee Che Ismail said Star Publications’ consistency in highlighting green content had caught his eye.

He learnt the company had also put in place many green initiatives behind the scenes.

“The productiveness of The Star in making the public aware of how to keep this country clean, green and safe, as well as its in-house energy saving and recycling programmes are good initiatives.

“This is the first such award, but we are continuously monitoring the landscape for outstanding green contributions not just by companies, but also individuals and other organisations,” he said.

Star Publications safety, heath and environment manager Eric Sjaunir Sjoehoer said the impetus for the company’s green direction came from Datin Linda Ngiam, who retired as group managing director and chief executive officer on Thursday.

Since starting its green efforts last year, Star Publications managed to reduce energy consumption at its headquarters by 9%, with savings of almost RM34,000 a year.

“This is encouraging as it recognises the employees’ efforts and Ngiam’s goal in pushing the agenda forward,” he said.
