Migration brought about by extreme climate events may be more complex than previously believed. Recent research from the University of Colorado for the Worldwatch Institute’s Vital Signs Online service said that climate-related migrations are mostly short distance and within national borders, a factor that has implications for earlier predictions of the numbers of environmental refugees from climate-related disasters.
The study pointed out that climatic patterns are not the only reasons why populations migrate. Inter-related factors like poverty, land degradation, and political and economic pressures should also be accounted for when examining people’s migratory movements.
