Taking desalination plants offshore

Desalination systems could use mobile vessels and platform-based treatments to move offshore, paving the way for a simplified permitting process, said a new report. According to the WateReuse Association report, desalination is poised to be an indispensable component of global and national water management portfolios as populations grow and water access decreases. It said there are recent proposals to move desalination facilities offshore to address operational and environmental issues. The use of mobile vessels and platform-based facilities will not only simplify the permitting process for desalination plants but will also preserve shoreline land resources for other purposes.
