Tokyo Electric Power Co., Inc. (TEPCO) plans to continue with its renewable energy development plans in the face of the company’s serious financial difficulties following the accident at the Fukushima I nuclear power station.
TEPCO has announced a plan to implement drastic streamlining of its assets and organization to secure funds needed for the resolution of the accident and compensation for affected residents. In order to ensure enough electricity supply for this summer and onward, however, it is imperative for the company to strengthen and expand new power sources as alternatives to nuclear power. TEPCO therefore intends to continue pursuing its existing plans for power source development regardless of the project size.
TEPCO is promoting the construction of large-scale photovoltaic power generation (mega solar) plants, and plans to start operation at three sites between August this year and January next year. The combined total capacity of these plants is expected to reach about 30 MW. The company will also continue the ongoing construction of a small-scale hydroelectric power plant with an output of 1 MW, which is scheduled to start operation in June next year.
