Thailand’s foothold on rice challenged by India

Thailand’s decades-long place as the world’s top rice exporter slipped away with last year’s decision from the government to buy grain from farmers at a premium price of $450. India took advantage of that window when it re-entered the rice export market in September last year - enough to capture the top spot in the grains market this year. The Food and Agriculture Organisation and the US Department of Agriculture (USDA) pegs India’s rice shipment at about nine to 10 million tonnes.
