The Carbon Trust has hired Lau Xin Yi as green finance lead for Southeast Asia.

The Singaporean joins the London-headquartered firm, which helps organisations lower their carbon footprint, from thinktank Singapore Institute of International Affairs (SIIA), where she led a study on financing sustainable infrastructure in Southeast Asia.

As green finance lead—a newly created role for the Carbon Trust’s Southeast Asian operation—Lau will be focused on supporting financial institutions to decarbonise their portfolios, assess the impacts of their investments and set science-based targets.

The Carbon Trust was set up by the British government in 2001 to accelerate the UK’s move to a low carbon economy. It launched in China in 2009, and now has operations in Mexico, Amsterdam, and Johannesburg as well as Singapore.

Lau will be supporting the delivery of green finance solutions within the UK ASEAN Low Carbon Energy Programme (LCEP), a £15 million (US$17 million) aid programme under the UK Foreign and Commonwealth Office’s Prosperity Fund set up to boost green finance and energy efficiency projects in Southeast Asia.

She will be also working with the Carbon Trust’s Beijing office to explore how Chinese finance players can help accelerate Southeast Asia’s energy transition through the Belt and Road Initiative.

Lau joins a team of six staff in the Carbon Trust’s Singapore office.

She makes the switch after five years with SIIA, where she was senior policy research analyst.
