Tokyo’s Green Building Program is credited for preventing a power outage in Japan during the devastating earthquake in 2011. The initiative has reduced energy consumption by 20 per cent since its inception, which translated to power savings that proved a necessity during the earthquake. Now the program is inspiring green building practices in other parts of Japan. Last year, the Tokyo Metropolitan Government has recognised 15 new buildings in the capital as green building models.
