Varsity, Mitsubishi set up biofuel research centre

Universiti Teknologi Petronas (UTP) has set up a Centre for Biofuel and Biochemical Research (CBBR) in its campus here.

The university wants to become a leading centre of biomass research in Asia. UTP hopes to produce the best biomass utilisation researchers and engineers, and become a key member of a global alliance of top biomass utilisation centres in Asia.

UTP rector Datuk Dr Zainal Abidin Kasim said the CBBR would publish high-impact journals and bring technology developments to the industry.

“We want to develop talented researchers and engineers to become top biomass experts by making available state-of-the-art facilities for research.

“We also want to offer courses on green technology for postgraduate students and engineers,” he said at the opening of CBBR here yesterday.

The opening was conducted by Mitsubishi Corporation Malaysia’s chief executive officer Junichi Iseda and Zainal.

The CBBR is a collaborative effort by UTP and Mitsubishi, which started in April 2009 when a strategic cooperation was forged between the two sides through a memorandum of understanding.
