VW and Chinese partner developing electric cars

Volkswagen and partner Shanghai Auto (SAIC) are jointly developing compact electric cars for the Chinese market. The two companies plan to build and sell electric versions of the Golf hatchback and Lavida sedan in China, and are also considering the joint development of hybrids and other “new energy” vehicles for that market.

A report in the Guangzhou Daily said SAIC officials confirmed the two partners are working together on electric compacts for China.

VW executives earlier said the company was planning to begin selling EVs in China in 2013-14, including the e-Golf and the e-Lavida, with an exclusive China-specific electric car in the pipeline for 2018.
