Waste to energy developer looks to expand

Global waste to energy developer and operator, GreenWorld Development Inc. is to planning to develop and build 200 MWt of utility scale waste to energy power plants across U.S., EU and Asia by 2016.

According to the company, when complete the projects will generate revenues in excess of $250 million and treat 700,000 tons (635,000 tonnes) of waste.

GreenWorld says that its first waste to energy centre in the UK will be based in Market Warsop in Nottinghamshire. The site consists of 2.5 acres with sufficient area to install a 7 MW combined heat and power (CHP) tyre to energy plant.

The site has a waste transfer license allowing it to take in 100 tons (91 tonnes) of tyres per day, which the company says provides sufficient feed stock for the planned energy generation - there is also space for the storage of 500,000 tyres.

The company is in discussions to acquire further licenses in the UK and USA, in addition to the development of its OHIO facilities.

Further to this development, according to the company it is planning to take advantage of a global market that it says analysts expect to reach $28.8 billion by 2015, yet has few utility scale international players.

To realise this ambition, GreenWorld says that it plans to grow its business both organically and through merger and acquisitions of existing facilities in its target markets.

“The steadily escalating volume of waste, growing populations, rising standards of living, and increased urbanisation, in addition to the volatile and rising oil prices and increasing demand for power are the major growth drivers for the waste to energy industry,” explains Mark Burkhalter, senior strategic advisor and independent consultant in the National Government Affairs practice of McKenna Long & Aldridge LLP.
