Global wind farms could supply 12 per cent of the world’s electricity need by 2020, but only if world governments continue to enforce policies to allow it. This is according to a new report from industry body Global Wind Energy Council (GWEC), which projected that global installed wind capacity will reach 1,150GW by 2020, from 238GW in 2011. Calling it an “advanced scenario,” the GWEC said obstacles in the industry still have to be overcome to reach this 2020 capacity forecast. The GWEC said the industry, in previous years, had been outperforming forecasts but that recently it had shifted to a modest growth partly owing to the slowdown of the global economy.
