2012 has so far witnessed bouts of high temperature, extreme weather events and an unprecedented melting of the Arctic sea ice, reported the World Meteorological Organization in a provisional statement to inform climate negotiators attending the UN climate talks in Doha. WMO data show that the January to October period ranked as the ninth warmest on record since 1850. The above-average temperatures, it said, had affected most of the world’s land surface areas except for Australia and some parts of northern China.
