Small island developing states may have no choice but to lead on climate action but they can no longer stand alone: everyone must join the fight to safeguard the planet for generations to come.
The decision on who will host COP31 has been deferred until next June. But whether or not Australia ends up winning the bid, the world's third-largest fossil fuel exporter needs to develop a plan to phase out its coal and gas production.
While shipping is essential to the global economy, so is reducing the associated pollution. Requiring shipping companies to pay for their vessels’ greenhouse-gas emissions would go a long way toward advancing this objective, while generating much-needed revenues for climate-vulnerable developing countries.
The global food system is responsible for about 30 per cent of annual greenhouse gas emissions.
