The Department of Energy (DOE), in partnership with the Asian Development Bank (ADB), is set to launch “Watts Out!“ TV Olympics on August 16 to 22 at the Atrium, SM Megamall in Mandaluyong City to demonstrate the most energy efficient technologies available in the local television market. This is part of DOE’s “Bright Now! Do Right. Be Bright.” energy efficiency initiative.
The “Watts Out!” campaign has invited TV manufacturers to participate in the event to display their most energy efficient 32 inch CCFL- and LED-backlit LCD models. The power consumption of each television will be monitored during the course of this seven-day event.
“Watts Out!” will demonstrate to consumers the effect of the appliance’s power consumption on their monthly electricity bill.
Many consumers are not aware that the power rating, measured in Watts, is displayed at the back of of every appliance. The lower the Watts rating, the less it costs to operate.
Consumers who choose to purchase energy efficient TV or appliance, save money on their electricity bills and are also making environmentally conscious choices for the Philippines.
“The Watts Out! TV Olympics is part of the government’s efforts to effect a change to a more sustainable and practical lifestyle for Filipinos. In this way, we are not only lowering our electricity bills, we are also helping in managing our power consumption for our benefit and the environment since this will lessen our carbon footprint,” DOE Secretary Jose Rene D Almendras said, noting that energy efficiency and conservation is a priority for DOE and a low-cost way to help the environment.
“Hopefully with the success of this campaign, more and more people will be conscious in checking the energy labels of all the appliance being used at home, in the offices, and other areas to be more energy efficient and practical with our choices,” Almendras added.
DOE is promoting energy efficiency and conservation through the development of energy labeling and efficiency standards for home appliance.
“Watts Out!” is a technical assistance project funded by the ADB as part of climate change mitigation efforts. According to research, a colored television is a high priority item for most Filipino households, taking precedence over space cooling and refrigeration. Televisions therefore represent a highly desirable appliance and an excellent opportunity to raise awareness regarding the principles of energy efficiency and its impact on alleviating climate change.
SM Supermalls will provide the venue while SkyCable committed to provide cable connections for better viewing. Other partners for the event include: The Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines-Episcopal Commission on Youth, Young Women’s Christian Association, Girl Scouts of the Philippines, The Center for Clean and Renewable Energy Development, World Youth Alliance, Philippine Appliance Industry Association, UP-Saver, FEU-TAMVOL and DLSU Physics Society.
Partner schools include Adamson, De La Salle University, Miriam College, Don Bosco, FEU East Asia College, Polytechnic University of the Philippines, Rizal Technological University and University of the East. These organizations will serve as independent monitors during the event.
The public is invited to attend and visit the participating booths of the following TV brands: Devant, Haier.
