BASF presents ways to make animal nutrition safer and more sustainable

- BASF to introduce NovasilTM Plus in Asia/Pacific

- Natugrain® TS and Natuphos® feed enzymes for improved digestibility

- BASF at booth no. E040 in Hall 106 of the Bangkok International Trade & Exhibition Center (BITEC)

Bangkok, Thailand - March 11, 2013 BASF is exhibiting its highquality, innovative product solutions for safer and more sustainable animal nutrition at this year’s VIV Asia in Bangkok, Thailand on March 13-15, 2013.

“The animal nutrition industry in Asia Pacific is a fast-growing industry, due to the increased urbanization and a strong population growth in the region,” said Stephen Crisp, Regional Head of Animal Nutrition, Asia/Pacific. “Our goal is to optimize the feed-to-meat value chain by addressing the most important issues in animal nutrition including mycotoxins, preservation, and feeding efficiency.”

As a leading supplier of feed additives and services, BASF offers vitamins, carotenoids, enzymes, organic acids, and other specialty products on the basis of more than 40 years of experience in the animal nutrition industry in Asia/Pacific.

NovasilTM Plus Aflatoxin Binder and Anti-caking Agent

Since January 2013, the feed additive Novasil™ Plus has been available directly from its producer, BASF. Novasil™ Plus is calcium montmorillonite-rich clay that specifically binds aflatoxins during the digestive process, thus preventing them from being absorbed by animals. The binding activity of Novasil™ Plus is independent of the pH value in the gut. Since Novasil™ Plus only binds aflatoxins (and nonvaluable nutrients), it is unique in preserving the nutritional value of feed.

Aflatoxin contamination of grains is widespread and a major feed safety problem in Asia/Pacific. The variable warm and humid weather conditions in South Asia, the ASEAN countries, and China favor mold growth and mycotoxin formation, both before and after harvest. Unless effective steps are taken to preserve feed, for example with organic acids like BASF’s Lupro-Mix®, the risk of animals being exposed to aflatoxin is high throughout the year. Aflatoxins cause liver and kidney damage in livestock and impair the animals’ immune systems. Via deposits in milk, aflatoxins can impact the safety of food for human consumption. Adding Novasil™ Plus to feed grains effectively binds aflatoxin in an animal’s digestive tract, thus making animal nutrition, and ultimately human nutrition as well, safer.

Novasil™ Plus is also used as an anti-caking agent to improve the flowability of feed ingredients. The use of Novasil™ Plus as aflatoxin binder or anti-caking agent depends on its registration status in the respective country.

Enzymes For Improved Feed Digestibility

BASF is a pioneer in developing and applying feed enzymes. Thanks to Natuphos® (phytase), Natugrain® TS (NSP-splitting enzymes), and the combination product Natuphos® Combi, feed producers can offset the most prevalent anti-nutritive substances in feed.

Adding enzymes to pig and poultry feeds makes otherwise virtually indigestible plant components digestible, thus improving the utilization of phosphorus, other trace elements, nutrients, and energy.

BASF’s feed enzymes have proven their efficacy and outstanding performance in animals in numerous feeding trials over the last 20 years. They are backed by matrix values, developed by BASF’s feed experts, that have become a market standard in the feed industry. BASF develops tailored enzyme solutions that precisely match customers’ feed production processes. Feed producers can thus not only optimize feed efficiency and profitability, but also contribute to sustainable feeding in this growing industry in Asia Pacific.
