Greenergy breaks ground for 200-MW solar plus storage project in Isabela

Greenergy Solutions Inc. held a ceremonial groundbreaking on May 28, 2019 for a 200-megawatt (MW) solar power plant and storage facility in Cordon, Isabela, Philippines.

Ruth P. Briones, Chair and CEO, Greenergy Solutions, announced during the groundbreaking that the Cordon Solar project will be the first of four large-scale utility solar plus storage projects the company will construct in Isabela province, Philippines.

Briones said the project will provide 24-hour uninterrupted power that will be initially supplied to consumers under the Wholesale Electricity Spot Market (WESM) while negotiating for a long-term Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs) with distribution utilities.

She noted that the project will first construct a 50-MW facility and will be expanded to 200 MW in five years. Briones added that the company was able to secure about 300 hectares of land for the project.

The solar facility will be constructed within an area of 75-hectares covered by a Special Land Use Permit to be converted into a 25-year Forestland Lease Agreement (FLAG) issued by the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR).

The facility is expected to be online early in 2020 and the expansions will subsequently proceed after the commissioning of the initial capacity.

Briones unveiled another similarly significant project: The plan to construct a co-located Biomass/Waste-to-Energy (WTE) Project in the same project site.

Briones said the Biomass-WTE project will provide livelihood opportunities to the people living in the adjacent communities. Neighbouring local government units will feed the solid wastes to the biomass/WTE facility, therefore getting rid of their waste problems and at the same time supporting clean energy generation.  The Biomass Facility will establish energy crops plantation in the timberland areas adjacent to the project site in order to secure the supply of feedstock for the project.

Lynn Zuniega, town mayor of Cordon, Isabela, welcomed the project with great expectation.

Zuniega considers the project as being instrumental to address the impacts of climate change in the province of Isabela. She noted the importance and significance of these projects in Cordon as she opened the municipality for more investments.

The Cordon Solar Power Project was issued Solar Energy Service Contract 2015-09-255 on December 23, 2015 with the regulatory permits procured by Greenergy Solutions Inc. during a period of two years.

Gazillion Construction and Development Corporation and Precious Gold Construction will provide construction services to the said co-located renewable energy projects.
