·Advocating responsible eco business practices through the inauguration of Panasonic Manufacturing Philippines Corporation as an ‘eco ideas’ Factory
·“Environmental renovation” of new refrigerator plant doubles annual production capacity to more than 300,000 units
Manila, Philippines – Panasonic Manufacturing Philippines Corporation (PMPC), embarks on a new era of environmental manufacturing through its inauguration as the first model ‘eco ideas’ Factory in the Philippines. Today’s momentous inauguration completes Panasonic Asia Pacific’s development plans of championing green manufacturing practices within the Asia Pacific, Middle East and Africa region.
Panasonic Asia Pacific, regional headquarters, announced its commitment to environmental sustainability through the regional ‘eco ideas’ Declaration in 2010. The Declaration highlights the central role Panasonic ‘eco ideas’ Factories play as a platform to communicate the company’s eco commitments to external stakeholders and the society at large.
As an ‘eco ideas’ Factory, PMPC integrates business growth with environmental contributions by utilizing green manufacturing practices in the manufacture of energy efficient home appliances, such as refrigerators, air conditioners, washing machines and electric fans. Such eco efforts have been recognized externally. In 2010, PMPC was awarded the Lakan Ng Lawa Award from the Laguna Lake Development Authority and in 2011, the ECOSWITCH Award from the Green Philippines Island of Sustainability.
Taking stewardship of its business activities, PMPC will continue to reduce carbon dioxide emissions, amount of waste generated and chemical substance use, so as to mitigate environmental impact. The factory also promotes eco consciousness through eco learning programs for students, opening up their manufacturing facility to enable them to learn and understand green manufacturing practices. Currently, 8,000 local students have participated in the program in FY ending March 2013.
“Panasonic’s ‘eco ideas’ Factory inauguration is the biggest pro-environment expansion the company has pursued since the establishment of its two main manufacturing plants operating outside Metro Manila. The facility serves as a good example for other manufacturers here in the country to be environmental leaders, addressing environmental challenges though business activities and collaboration with stakeholders. Continued partnerships between the public and private sectors will not only propel sustainability efforts, but also enhance employment opportunities here in the Philippines,” said Engineer Carlos J. Magno, Regional Director of Environmental Management Bureau, Department of Environment and Natural Resources.
In conjunction with PMPC’s inauguration, the ‘eco ideas’ Factory announced the opening of its new refrigerator plant, with an investment of around 500 million peso. The plant has undergone “environmental renovation”, streamlining its operations with process innovation and more efficient machinery. Such sustainable industry practices help to reduce the plant’s energy and water consumption, as well as the use of chemicals in its daily manufacturing activities. With “environmental renovation”, the new refrigerator plant is able to almost double its annual production capacity to more than 300,000 units, even though its area has been reduced to about one third of its original size.
Mr. Nobuo Yasuhira, President, Panasonic Manufacturing Philippines Corporation elaborated, “The ‘eco ideas’ Factory embodies a long term commitment towards environmental sustainability, which we aim to uphold with the help of our customers, business partners and the community. The more efficient new refrigerator plant is a solid affirmation of our unwavering commitment to provide A Better Life, A Better World by developing environmentally friendly household appliances for the Filipino market and campaigning for ecological awareness. My goal is to enhance the Panasonic brand here in the Philippines. I strongly believe with the ‘eco ideas’ Factory and new refrigerator plant, we can bring PMPC’s economic and societal contributions to another level.”
Panasonic Manufacturing Philippines Corporation marks a completion of Panasonic Asia Pacific’s aim to have one ‘eco ideas’ Factory in each county with manufacturing sites in the Asia Pacific, Middle East and Africa region, bringing the total number of ‘eco ideas’ Factories to seven. The list includes, Panasonic Vietnam Group at the Thang Long Industrial Park, Refrigeration Devices Company in Singapore, Home Appliances Company in Thailand, AVC (Audio Visual Components) Networks Company in Malaysia, Lighting Company in Indonesia and Panasonic Technopark in Jhajjar, Haryana, India.
