A unique platform that helps hotels reduce wastage by matching unused items with donation requests from local charities and organisations with a cause.
Singapore (November 2016) — Local social enterprise PAPAYAPATHS has launched a free online donation platform that seeks to provide hotels and charities in Singapore with a mutually beneficial waste diversion solution. Called the H3Rs Giveaways Programme, the project will act as a “match-making” platform to channel unused items donated by hotels towards the needy community via tie-ups with charity organisations.
The process is simple: hotels are invited to list any of their items for donation – which can range from large furniture items to excess stationery products – on the PAPAYAPATHS website. At the same time, charitable organisations can post their donation wish list for specific items that their beneficiaries may require. The H3Rs Giveaways Programme will therefore match the available items with the corresponding requests, enabling unwanted, yet usable items from hotels to be put to practical use instead of being disposed of.
Muriel Boutin-Becuwe, PAPAYAPATHS Co-Founder and creator of the H3Rs Giveaways Programme, said, “We spoke to many hotels and organisations, and realised that most of them yearn to be more sustainable and reduce wastage, but there was a lack of a proper outlet for them to do so. Hence, we spotted an opportunity to collaborate with the hospitality industry to create a practical and socially beneficial solution for waste diversion. This recycling programme that we have come up with is both straightforward and effective — hotels get to clear their unused items in a responsible manner, while the organisations with a cause and/or their beneficiaries can receive useful items for free.”
Since the programme was first soft launched few months ago, it has garnered high interest from over 100 hotels and organisations to date. Hotels that have come onboard include Marina Bay Sands, which has donated some of its furniture items to Babes Pregnancy Crisis Support, an organisation that assists pregnant teenage mothers.
Kevin Teng, Executive Director of Sustainability at Marina Bay Sands, said, “The PAPAYAPATHS platform provided Marina Bay Sands with a convenient and efficient waste diversion opportunity for our underused furniture items, which went towards a good cause rather than being discarded. We will continue to work with PAPAYAPATHS to reduce our waste and simultaneously support those in need. In the long run, we hope that other hospitality partners will come onboard this meaningful cause and collectively, help reduce the impact on our environment.”
Other participating hotels and supporting organisations include IBIS Hotels Singapore, the National Environmental Agency (NEA), The Food Bank Singapore, National Council of Social Service (NCSS) and National Volunteer and Philanthropy Centre (NVPC).
