The HQ Building: the 1st Corporate Location — [WE] Project

The Headquarters Building has become the first building as well as corporate location in Shanghai to host a collection box for the recycling of waste electronic items through Green Initiatives’ [WE]Project. The partnership is especially meaningful since the building owners have decided to provide this ‘facility’ as a service to their tenants. All collected items will be disposed of in an environmentally friendly manner through TES-AMM, a certified recycling company and partner on the [WE] Project.

Building owner Multi Luck Real Estate decided to sponsor a collection box for the 31-storey building after an overwhelming majority of companies based in The Headquarters Building voted in favor of the project in an internal tenant survey. Multi Luck Real Estate is the first company from the Greater China region to support the [WE] Project.

According to Josie Lin, Chief Operating Officer of Urban Holdings, the Chinese subsidiary of Multi Luck, The Headquarters Building is certified LEED Gold and as a responsible landlord we aim to provide a sustainable and harmonious working environment for our tenants. We lease office spaces to many leading Chinese and multinational companies and they expressed a desire to take part in an initiative that resonates with their corporate responsibility objectives. The [WE] Project is the perfect cost-effective solution to achieve this and the transparency and educational component of the project is what made it popular with our tenants and staff.”

“We are delighted to have The Headquarters Building as our first corporate sponsor on The [WE] Project,” says Green Initiatives founder Nitin Dani. “Not only is Multi Luck Real Estate the first to support our efforts to reduce the environmental impact of e-waste but it is also the first time a building owner, and not just a tenant or company residing within a building, has sponsored a collection box. This means that many more people working from a single building will now be able to dispose of their e-waste in a convenient and environmentally friendly manner.”

China is one of the leading producers of e-waste globally, contributing over 3.6 million tonnes of e-waste in 2011 alone, according to a UNU report. This amount is further expected to grow by 20 percent annually. The [WE] Project aims to create awareness and provide a solution to the problem by supplying the community with a transparent, reliable and environmentally safe way to dispose of their old and used electronics. [WE] collection boxes are being placed in locations all across Shanghai to make it more accessible to the community.

The [WE] Project will be officially launched on Monday 12:30-1:30pm, August 29 at an event for the tenants and staff of The Headquarters Building. The event will provide information on the e-waste problem, current challenges, how the project aims to provide a solution to this problem and what happens to the collected e-waste. Volunteers from Green Initiatives team will be present on site to answer any questions and concerns from the attendees.
