Previously committed to solely using recyclable plastic, from now on, Sipahh straws will be produced using PLA (polylactic acid), a thermoplastic derived from plant starch such as corn or sugar cane rather than petrochemicals from fossil fuels. Eco-friendly PLA compostable straws are manufactured using less energy and safely break down, leaving no toxic residue.
Plastic straws, meanwhile, do not biodegrade —they photodegrade, breaking down into ever smaller pieces over decades or even centuries. These microplastic particles contaminate soil and waterways, and frequently find their way into the oceans, where they are ingested by marine animals—the toxins they contain subsequently entering humans’ systems through the food chain.
Equally concerning, intact straws, one of the most common items of plastic pollution found in our seas, are the cause of immense harm to ocean wildlife. It’s estimated that 390 million plastic straws are used each day in the United States alone, with very few of them being disposed of properly and recycled.
Recognising and responding to growing consumer concern over the environmental impact of single-use plastic straws, Sipahh feels it is time to make the change to a more sustainable alternative.
Explaining the motivation for switiching to eco-friendly compostable straws, Suchet Rastogi, CEO of Sipahh’s parent Unistraw said: “This is not about a company or a product. It’s a very personal thing. I have two daughters and I want to leave them with a world they can enjoy, be proud of and find good health in.”
Mr. Rastogi asserts that it is only right that, as a company doing business on the global marketplace, Unistraw and Sipahh should embrace values of good environmental stewardship and corporate social responsibility. “We are in the business of health. Today, health is not just about products but about lifestyle,” Mr. Rastogi said. “And the environment is a core part of any lifestyle. So in a round about way, we’re simply looking at what we do best: Health.”
Indeed, offering a healthier flavored drink is among Sipahh’s core attributes. Each Sipahh straw contains just 2 grams (less than half a teaspoon) of sugar, as compared to the 15 grams found in an average ready-to-drink flavored milk —or the 46 grams of sugar in most sodas / soft drinks. The World Health Organization recommends that children aged 2 to 10 should consume no more than 13 grams of added sugar each day, making Sippah the ideal choice for parents who are conscious of their children’s health —but still want to serve a tasty flavored drink treat.
Sipahh straws are available in a number of mouthwatering varieties, including Cocoa-Bean Chocolate, Luscious Strawberry, Banana Smoothie, Hello Marshmallow! and Velvet Vanilla. Sold in more than 40 countries globally, Sipahh’s new compostable product will be rolling out to all markets with immediate effect, with Costco Canada being the first distributor in North America to receive the environmentally friendly new straw.
