Mr Bernard Tan is the Country President for Singapore, and the Managing Director for Strategic Projects and International Business Development for the Sinar Mas Group.
Mr Bernard Tan joined the Sinar Mas Group in June 2017. He assumed the role of Managing Director for Corporate Affairs, Sustainability and Global Communications in Asia Pulp and Paper during a transition period (Aug 2017-May2018), and relinquished these roles once the transition was completed. In the latter role, he developed a global perspective of the challenges in sustainability in the forestry industry.
Prior to joining Sinar Mas, Mr Tan had a distinguished background in public service in Singapore. He had a successful career in the military, where he rose to the rank of Brigadier General. After retirement, he joined DBS Bank, South East Asia’s largest bank, where he was Managing Director and held positions in Debt Capital Markets, was Country Head of Taiwan and Indonesia over a span of six years. He assumed the appointment of Chief Marketing Officer in ST Engineering, a diversified engineering company with interests in over 40 countries, a job which afforded him experience in global coverage.
Mr. Tan is a Director in Premier Corporation in Singapore. He was elected into a four year term as Deputy President of the Football Association of Singapore. He is also a Board Member of Catholic Junior College in Singapore.
Mr. Tan holds a Bachelor’s degree from the University of Birmingham, UK (First Class Honours) in Economics and Political Science and a Masters of Business Administration from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, USA.
He speaks English, Mandarin and Bahasa Indonesia. He is an active sportsmen, plays golf and runs marathons as a hobby.
Mr Tan is married with three sons.
