RE-building Better: Strengthening the Role of Renewable Energy in Recovery and Development

The Philippines continues to grapple with the impacts of COVID-19 and recent typhoons.

Damages have been immense — while thousands have died, countless others have lost their jobs and livelihoods due to the lockdown arising from the coronavirus.

At the same time, typhoon Ulysses has submerged whole towns, leaving many homeless and perhaps even hopeless as they try their best to get back on their feet.

“Build Back Better” is therefore a resounding call across sectors because to simply recover under these circumstances is not enough.

With this in view, “RE-building Better: Strengthening the Role of Renewable Energy in Recovery and Development” is the theme chosen for the 3rd Renewable Energy (RE) Congress to be held online on 18 December, 1-5pm.

This first virtual multi-stakeholder RE gathering is intended for learning and collaboration to attain viable energy solutions, particularly renewable energy, to address the impacts of the pandemic, climate change, and economic crises. Speakers from government, the energy industry, academe, and people’s organizations will tackle policies, practices, and challenges to make energy sufficient, affordable, sustainable, resilient/adaptive, inclusive, and responsive to the call of the times.

Sessions will cover the renewable energy situation in the Philippines, role of RE in COVID, disasters and economic recovery, how to make RE programs and technologies adaptive and inclusive, and financing RE.

There are also deep-dive sessions on 11 December and 14 December 2020 (1-3.30pm) that will tackle ongoing and emerging renewable energy initiatives in marginalized and off-grid areas.

This free event is organized by the Center for Empowerment, Innovation and Training on Renewable Energy (CentRE) and Friedrich Ebert Stiftung (FES) Philippines Office, together with Mindanao Development Authority, CREATE-Ateneo de Davao University, Mindanao Renewable Energy Research and Development Center (MREC), and New Energy Nexus.QA

The CentRE and FES first co-organized the RE Congress and Exhibit in Quezon City in 2018, followed by the joint RE Congress-SEECON event in Cebu City in 2019.

The two events, with over 500 participants in attendance, were able to provide accessible and affordable venues to learn from and exchange information about the latest RE technologies and practices and opened opportunities for matching or forging of commitment to pursue RE projects.
