Asia’s fast growth demands furious sustainable transport action

With a growing population and a fast-growing economy, Asia needs to also upgrade its sustainable transport systems, said the Asian Development Bank in a transport forum held in Manila. The ADB estimates that the development of sustainable transport in the region will cost $2.5 trillion between 2010 to 2020.

The multilateral development funding agency said some of Asia’s policymakers have already taken steps in the right direction investing in rail, non-motorized vehicles and efficiency measures. However, more should still be done as Asia’s growing economies now account for huge carbon emissions due to increased fuel use, high air pollution levels, and traffic congestion.
