Avoiding blackouts in South Korea

South Korea will be procuring more than 4,000 megawatts of extra power capacity in a bid to stave off possible blackouts following closures on some of its nuclear plants. South Korea’s economy ministry said they will source an additional 1,270 MW of power capacity from private and public generators. Some 3,000 MW may have to come from power savings from less heating at firms and public places. The move is said to give South Korea a 28 per cent safety margin to guarantee power supply over the harsh Korean winter. Two nuclear reactors have shut down recently to replace parts while another reactor had extended its closure after cracks were found at the facility. About a third of South Korea’s electricity requirements come from its 23 nuclear reactors.
